PROJECT MENSWEAR - GENDERFLUID

COLLECTION

The collection „DECONSTRUCTION“ is about breaking away from conventional gender boundaries and letting them disappear. The collection is inspired by the emancipation movement “Blue Jeans” in the 1970s, led by feminists and leaders who demonstrated for gender equality. The classic worker‘s trousers became a symbol for the emancipation of women and at that time stood as a symbol for rebellion and freedom. As a symbol of this movement, I mainly work with denim from old clothes and also use sustainable Tencel Rib, Jersey, cord and rib fabric. With this mix of materials, playing with the silhouettes between wide and narrow, I want to underline and unite the differentiation between the sex in our society. The actual spirit of the time has a strong influence on my collection. Combined with futuristic elements, such as belt straps with quick release fasteners as sporty accessories and futuristic prints.

What does Genderfluid mean?

Someone who is fluid, also called gender fluid is a person whose gender identity (the gen- der they identify with most) is not fixed. It can change over time or from day-to-day. Fluid is a form of gender identity or gender expression, rather than a sexual orientation.

Fluid relates to how a person identifies themselves internally and presents themselves to the world. A person who is gender fluid may identify as male one day, female the next, both male and female, or neither. It affects their gender expression, the way a person presents themself to society (masculine, feminine, both, or neither).

What does masculinity mean today?

Even in 2021, masculinity for many still means not showing any weakness. If you google masculinity, you will find all kinds of physical and character attributes that are associated with stereotypical masculinity. „Broad shoulders“, „pronounced muscles“ „dominance“ and „coolness“ are just a few of them.

Classic men‘s fashion reflects this image by mostly presenting muted colors, clear cuts and monochrome fabrics. Pink shirts and playful silhouettes are exceptions that are quickly labeled as too feminine.

For some time now, the term “New Masculinity” has been referring to a change that breaks these clear boundaries between masculinity and femininity. More and more men are showing their own version of masculinity and expressing it through their fashion. Diversity that represents modern masculinity with its fashionable aesthetic, far from gender norms and stereotyped thinking.
